Cosmetic wear is limited to light scuffing in the pick path with some requisite minor dings and finish scuffs mostly relegated to the body parameter on the YS (Yellow Sunburst) gloss finish. Further emphasizing Tokai’s attention to detail, the saddles are individually Tokai-branded in true vintage-spec fashion. All of the original hardware is intact, and the chrome plating shows faint surface patina. The knobs and pickups covers show uniform yellowing, while the one-ply pickguard is still bright white. The stock set of tuners are intact, similar in shape to Fender’s “F” tuning machines, turning smoothly and holding pitch well.Īll of the stock electronics work as they should, with the Strat's Volume/Tone/Tone configuration, a five-way pickup selector switch, and trio of gray bobbin alnico magnet single coil pickups. On the headstock, the Tokai waterslide decal is extremely clean with spaghetti-style “Tokai” script and text which reads “This is the Exact Replica of the Good Old Strat” where one would typically expect to see the small patent numbers under the model name, stating Tokai's intent of producing a vital, soulful iteration of this classic Fender platform. The instrument matches traditional Fender spec with a 25 1/2“ scale length, 7 1/4” fretboard radius, and a 1 5/8” wide nut. The frets have plenty of meat, and the guitar plays well in all registers up the straight neck with a responsive truss rod. The fretboard retains the original slender fretwire which shows light uniform wear on the crowns of frets 1-10, and virtually no wear further up the fretboard. The maple neck has an effortless, medium C-shaped profile with slight shoulders, gaining a bit more heft as you travel up the fingerboard and measuring. Weighing 7lbs 10oz, this Tokai has been professionally setup here at Mike and Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, accurate intonation, and fast action. The pickups each meter just under 6k ohms.

The trio of gray bobbin alnico magnet single coil pickups have a chewy cut and sparkle, with a round-sounding neck pickup and plenty of bite and sparkle in the bridge position. The body wood ensures a distinctive note attack and midrange heft, and the maple board gives the guitar ideal treble snap and definition.
